The map pin has been shared. The driver has the exact coordinates. The coordinates are now being reinforced with a description involving a tea stall that may or may not still exist.

The map pin was introduced to solve a problem: verbal descriptions of pickup locations are imprecise, leading to misunderstandings, missed connections, and the specific anxiety of watching a cab circle a building for four minutes. The pin provides exact coordinates. The driver's navigation system reads the coordinates. The driver arrives.
The map pin system works. This has been confirmed annually since its introduction.
The Parallel System
Despite the map pin system working, a parallel verbal description system has operated alongside it without interruption. The verbal description provides landmarks, warnings, and contextual information that the pin does not contain.
This year's verbal descriptions included:
- "Near the tea stall" (tea stall closed in November 2024, still being referenced)
- "Blue gate on your right" (gate repainted yellow in March, still being referenced as blue)
- "Don't take the one-way" (drivers navigate by map and are not using the route described)
- "I'll be standing outside" (true, but not useful for navigation)
The Outcome
Drivers arrived using the pin. The verbal descriptions were received and in some cases read. In no documented case did a driver cite the verbal description as the reason they found the location. In several cases, drivers cited the verbal description as the reason they were confused, because the tea stall it referenced no longer exists.
The Recommendation
The map pin is sufficient. The annual review recommends discontinuing the parallel verbal description system, particularly references to landmarks that have changed.
The recommendation will not be implemented. The verbal description provides a sense of control over a situation that is already controlled. The sense of control is the point, not the navigation.
The tea stall will continue to be referenced. The gate will remain blue in the descriptions. The one-way warning will continue to be issued to drivers who are not using that road.
The pin will continue to work.
