Background
During the pandemic, online learning activity increased substantially across the subject's professional network. The subject completed three online courses between April 2020 and February 2021. The first completion was not announced. The second completion was announced because the subject had noticed that other completions were being announced and that the absence of an announcement might read as either unproductive or private, and the subject had not decided which impression to manage.
The second announcement received engagement. The engagement established the practice.
Current Status
The third certificate was received last Tuesday. The announcement was drafted on Wednesday and published Thursday morning. The drafting took forty minutes. The course itself involved approximately six hours of video content and two short assessments.
Procedure This Period
The draft followed a standard structure the subject has developed across the two prior announcements: an opening line naming the certificate, a middle section noting why the skill is relevant to current work or professional direction, and a closing line expressing forward momentum.
The post aims to sound personal, but the most personal moments often arrive in the most familiar script. The forward momentum line was the hardest to write because it had to be specific enough to feel genuine without being specific enough to create an expectation.
A temporary workaround for certificate announcement became the default because it worked once. Other people in the subject's immediate professional network have begun announcing certificates using similar structures. Two of them sent drafts to the subject for review before posting. The subject reviewed them.
Consequence
Once certificate announcement prevents one awkward moment, it must remain in force for the rest of the routine. The awkward moment it was preventing was the possibility of being perceived as not developing professionally during a period when professional development was a publicly managed activity. The awkward moment has not occurred. The certificate announcements continue regardless.
Other people begin planning around the workaround and quietly preserving it. A fourth course has been selected. The selection included implicit consideration of whether the completion certificate would be suitable for posting. Routine is considered proof even when nobody remembers the original reason.
Projected Status
Announcement of the fourth certificate is expected in April. The structure will follow the established format with personalized mid-section.
