Someone searches the cast while a show is still playing because a familiar face has become more urgent than the plot. This is the credits search habit, and it has completed another year of uninterrupted operation.
The habit begins, as most do, with a single legitimate use. An actor appears whose name cannot be placed. The suspension is minor but persistent. The search resolves it. The resolution produces a small satisfaction disproportionate to the effort. The satisfaction is logged somewhere not quite consciously, and the threshold for initiating the search drops.
By year two, the search occurs preemptively, before the uncertainty has fully formed.
The Mechanism
Credits search habit begins as a private precaution with no audience. It becomes visible enough that other people adjust their timing or expectations around it: a viewing partner glances over, waits, resumes. It becomes visible enough to shape the pace of the room.
The precaution turns into a social rule whose absence is noticed faster than its presence. A viewer who does not search the credits is now the one who needs to explain themselves.

The only remaining question, unresolved at year's end, is whether the search would be abandoned if the name, once found, turned out to matter less than not finding it had implied.
