Annual Review of Elevator Small Talk
A quarterly performance review of elevator small talk across the period of social re-entry in 2023.
SUBJECT: Elevator Small Talk REVIEW PERIOD: Q1-Q4 2023 PREPARED BY: Behavioral Continuity Office
Q1 , Reintroduction
Elevator small talk resumed in Q1 following two years of minimal indoor contact between strangers. Early results were mixed. Strangers attempt elevator small talk again but often abandon it after one sentence. The opening gambit varied: floor acknowledgment, weather, weekend reference. The completion rate was low. Both parties appeared to be waiting for confirmation that the other intended to continue.
Elevator small talk caused one small physical adjustment in Q1: increased proximity to the floor button panel, which allowed either party a credible exit.
Q2 , Normalization Attempt
Q2 saw modest improvement in completion rates. Nearby people began mirroring the adjustment without any coordination. A brief exchange became a corridor convention. The room develops etiquette nobody has formally announced. This was the primary Q2 development.
The activity is ordinary again while the body still treats it as negotiable. This remained the defining tension through Q2.
Q3 , Proceduralization
By Q3, elevator small talk had achieved a stable if attenuated form. Exchanges completed at a higher rate. Content narrowed to three categories: building logistics, weather, and the weekend. Departures from these categories remained uncommon. The governing rule applied: elevator small talk becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it.
Q4 , Current State
The behavior is now ambient. It neither excels nor fails. It occurs. The hesitation from Q1 has not fully resolved, but it no longer prevents initiation. This is the expected endpoint: not fluency, but function.
No changes recommended for the coming period.
