Annual Review of Food Photo Cooling

The meal arrived hot. It is being photographed. The photography is taking longer than the cooling window. The meal will be eaten warm.

Annual Review: Food Photo Cooling Period: The past year Subject: The relationship between documentation and consumption

Summary

A meal is most photogenic and most edible at approximately the same moment: immediately after arrival, when temperature is optimal, presentation is intact, and no element has migrated into another element.

The photograph and the meal compete for this moment. The photograph requires time. The meal does not wait.

Year in Review

Total meals photographed this year: approximately eighty. Average time from arrival to first bite due to photography: three minutes forty seconds. Optimal temperature window for most photographed foods: approximately ninety seconds. Meals consumed at optimal temperature: under fifteen percent.

The remaining eighty-five percent were consumed at temperatures best described as "warm," "fine," or, for the longer sessions, "passably acceptable."

The Photography Session

The standard food photography session involves:

  • Initial overview shot: fifteen seconds.
  • Close-up detail shot: twenty seconds.
  • The angle adjustment: forty-five seconds.
  • The "with ambient context" shot: thirty seconds.
  • The review: forty-five seconds.
  • The retake: forty-five seconds.

Total: approximately three and a half minutes. The food is waiting.

The Photographs

The photographs are good. They accurately document the meal at peak condition. They are sometimes shared, sometimes archived, and sometimes never viewed again after the initial review.

The meal was also good, within the constraints of the temperature it was at when eaten.

Both the photograph and the meal can be considered successful. The photograph is of a hotter meal than was eaten. This is documented in the photograph. The photograph cannot feel the difference.

The meal is eaten warm. The documentation is perfect. The annual review notes both without recommending a change, because the photography will continue and the meal will continue to wait for it.
