The System
The fridge document system operates on a simple principle: the fridge is seen multiple times daily. Items attached to it will also be seen multiple times daily. Visibility leads to remembrance, which leads to action.
This logic is correct in its first premise and second premise. The third link, from remembrance to action, is weaker.
The Seeing Record
The vehicle registration renewal notice was seen daily from March 4th to March 18th. On each occasion, it was seen, its purpose was understood, and the intention to address it was formed. On March 4th, the intention was fresh. On March 10th, the intention was familiar. On March 15th, the intention had become part of the background of the fridge experience.
The notice was acted upon on March 19th, when the deadline was three days away.
The Analysis
The fridge system prevents documents from being physically lost. It does not prevent the documents from becoming visually ambient. Items seen daily lose their salience over time.
The system is most effective in the first week. After two weeks, a document on the fridge requires something additional: a deadline approaching, a second stimulus, or a moment of sufficient administrative focus.
The system still works. The documents were not forgotten. The distinction between "seen and not acted on" and "forgotten" is meaningful and the fridge system correctly sits on the good side of that distinction.
