The Sequence

Every power cut produces the same sequence. The moment the power goes out, a brief quiet occurs. This quiet is the interval between the cut and the backup response.

Then: the first generator. Usually the closest commercial building, which has the fastest response time and the largest unit. Its hum is deep and regular.

Then: the residential generators, staggered by distance and warm-up time. Each has a slightly different tone. After several cuts, the neighborhood's generator profile becomes familiar: the high-pitched unit from the building across the road, the diesel knock from the construction site that has been a construction site for three years, the smooth industrial hum from the hospital two streets away.

The Information Content

The generator sequence is information. A building running on generator power has light in its windows. The pattern of lit and dark windows after a cut tells the observer which buildings are equipped. It also tells them, by extension, how long the neighborhood has been doing this, which buildings have resources, and which have chosen to wait for grid restoration.

The hum is also temporal information: when the generators run down or stop, the grid is usually restored shortly after. The quieting of the hum is the signal before the lights come back.

The Resolution

Power was restored at 10:47pm. The generators ran down over the following four minutes. The neighborhood returned to normal sound. The annual review notes that the generator hum is now recognizable, predictable, and carries a modest comfort: if the generators are running, the buildings are managing.
