A Field Guide to Last Item Memory Stages of Development, with Observable Indicators

Stage 1: The Item Ends

Someone uses the last of something. The last of something does not announce itself before it is gone. It announces itself at the moment of use, which is the moment after which it is no longer available, and also the moment when no action can be taken because something else is already in progress.

The coffee is finished while the kettle is boiling. The toothpaste ends on a weekday morning. The last plastic bag was used on the day before the grocery trip.

The item is gone. The information is noted.

Stage 2: The Note That Is Not Made

The subject does not write this down. Writing it down requires a surface, a writing instrument, a moment, and the intention to make the note before the intention is replaced by the next item on the list of morning tasks.

The information is held in memory instead. The memory is accurate.

Stage 3: The Transfer Problem

Last item memory is accurate because it was only required once, at the moment it was too late to act on. In the period April 2020 through May 2021, the household has operated on the understanding that the person who finished the item knows the item is finished.

This information has not been successfully transferred in forty-one of fifty-three documented cases. Documented in the sense that one person in the household recalls the exchange. The other person in the household does not recall the exchange because the exchange did not occur, or occurred as a verbal note delivered to a room rather than a person.

A verbal note delivered to a room is a note delivered to no one.

Stage 4: The Discovery

Someone else reaches for the item. The item is not there. The person who last used it is available. The person who last used it can now confirm when the item ended, approximately which day, and in what context.

This information is provided promptly and with a certain accuracy that suggests it has been held in reserve.

The household is supposed to run on shared information, yet one person holds the inventory and cannot transfer it. The transfer has been attempted through a whiteboard, a shared notes app, and a verbal agreement. All three are currently inactive.

Stage 5: The System That Will Be Implemented

By May 2021, the household has discussed the implementation of a grocery list system on three separate occasions. A system is agreed upon each time. The system is used for the first three items that run out after the agreement. The fourth item runs out on a day when the system was not checked.

The system is not formally abandoned. It is simply not used.

Observable Indicator

If the subject can name the last three items that ran out and approximately when, without consulting any written record: last item memory is active and the transfer system is not.
