The Late Reaction

The late reaction is a response to a message that is sent significantly after the conversation has concluded. It takes the form of an emoji reaction rather than a text reply, which signals that the sender is acknowledging without reopening.

The late reaction is technically always appropriate. The message is still there. The reaction option has not expired. A thumbs up on a message sent six hours ago does not violate any rule.

The late reaction creates a small social notification that somebody's message was seen. The somebody may have forgotten the message. They are now reminded of it at 9:47pm.

The Reasons for Late Reaction

The most common reason: the message was seen at the time but was not acted on, and the reaction is a closing action that resolves the unread status.

The second most common reason: the message was found during a scroll back through the conversation for an unrelated reason.

The third: the sender read several unread messages at once and reacted to each sequentially, creating a sequence of late reactions across multiple messages that reconstructs the conversation in compressed form.

The Experience of Receiving One

The late reaction is noticed because it produces a notification. The notification references a message that is no longer in context. The recipient reads the message, recalls the context, sees the reaction, and returns to whatever they were doing.

No response is expected. None is given. The exchange is complete.

The Function

The late reaction communicates: I was here, I saw this, I am present in this conversation even at this hour. It is a small act of presence. It requires nothing. It produces nothing except a moment of mild puzzlement.

The year produced many such moments. None required further action.
