Q1 Finding: Initial Exposure
The flat is on the third floor, corridor-side. The lift is six meters from the front door. The lift produces a bell on arrival.
In January, the bell was background. It was registered as ambient. It did not prompt the subject to form any hypothesis about who was arriving or departing.
Q2 Finding: Pattern Formation
By April, the subject had, without intending to, begun categorizing the bell.
The bell at 7:15 AM is the neighbor in 3C departing for work. The bell at 8:30 AM is either the same neighbor returning for a forgotten item or a different neighbor on an irregular schedule. The bell at 12:45 PM is a delivery, probably, because that is when deliveries come.
This information was not sought. It arrived through repetition.
A background sound becomes official only after its absence proves how much attention it occupied.
Q3 Finding: Active Monitoring
A week in August when the 7:15 bell did not occur for three consecutive days prompted the subject to notice. The neighbor appeared to be traveling. The subject had not met this neighbor.
The subject's knowledge of the neighbor's schedule was entirely acoustic.
Q4 Status: Current
The subject can now, from bed, identify:
- The approximate floor a resident is departing from, based on the bell pitch differential
- The time of day based on bell frequency
- Whether a delivery is more likely than a resident departure, based on the number of consecutive bells
Eventually the room is mentally organized around a noise that was originally considered background.
The subject has not used this knowledge for any purpose. It is ambient intelligence, acquired without design, applicable to nothing.
Annual Finding:
The lift bell through wall is operational. The resident knows more about the building's movement patterns than they have any practical use for.
This will continue for as long as the flat is occupied.
