Application for Gym Equipment Wiping
Gym equipment is wiped both before and after use even though the posted rules no longer ask for both.

Background: the pre-wipe and post-wipe practice was established during a period when posted rules required it. The posted rules have since changed. The current posted rules require only the post-wipe. The applicant continues both.
Justification for continued pre-wipe: the previous user's post-wipe cannot be verified. The equipment may or may not have been wiped. The pre-wipe resolves this uncertainty at a cost of approximately eight seconds and one paper towel.
Gym Equipment Wiping causes one small physical adjustment before the workout begins. Nearby people begin mirroring the adjustment. Not because they read the applicant's decision. Because the paper towel dispenser is visible, the action is visible, and the action looks like the thing you do before using equipment.
The room develops etiquette nobody has formally announced, sustained by those who have not yet stopped and those who have not yet noticed they could.
The activity is ordinary again while the body still treats it as negotiable. Ordinary means no deliberate decision is required. Negotiable means the body is still making one, quietly, without surfacing it for review.
Under the governing rule, gym equipment wiping becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The applicant has used this gym forty-two times since the rules changed. The pre-wipe has been performed forty-two times. The applicant has not assessed whether the forty-second and forty-first times were the same decision.
The hesitation that outlasted the indoor years is not disruptive. It takes eight seconds. Eight seconds is not a clinical finding. It is the gap between what the body learned and what the rules now require, and it will close on its own schedule.
