Applicant Background
The subject was invited to a party. The party starts at eight. The subject intends to attend the party. The subject would like to arrive at a time when there are already enough people present to absorb the arrival without it becoming an event, but not so many people that the good positions near the kitchen have already been taken and the conversational configurations have solidified into groups the subject would have to interrupt.
The subject does not know what time this is.
The Research Phase
Three messages have been sent to determine when others are arriving. One person said around eight-thirty. One said probably nine but definitely before ten. One said whenever you're going, come with me, which does not answer the question and creates a new coordination dependency.
The subject is now managing a social logistics problem that did not exist when parties started at eight and people arrived when they arrived.
First Consequence
The first case of party arrival timing changes one small decision without being discussed. The subject, having gathered arrival estimates, produces a composite arrival window and targets the middle of it. The target is eight-fifty. The targeting requires monitoring the time for the two hours before eight-fifty to ensure the target is met without requiring the subject to leave before feeling ready, which is a separate calculation currently running in parallel.
Second Consequence
After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around party arrival timing. The person who said around eight-thirty has now also checked in about arrival times and arrived at a similar window through a similar process. Both parties are targeting approximately the same time using the same methodology while both believing their target was derived independently.
Neither arrives at eight-thirty.
Third Consequence
Eventually party arrival timing acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. Arriving first is no longer a neutral outcome. It requires performing ease in a space that has not yet been socially warmed. This performance is possible but requires effort that feels disproportionate to what is supposed to be a relaxed event.
The Absurd Rule
Social recovery time must be hidden inside the calendar because wanting people and needing rest are treated as opposites. The party is wanted. The recovery will be needed. Both will occur. Only one will be scheduled.
The Contradiction
The event was wanted and often enjoyed, yet recovery from it is treated like a separate appointment.
The subject arrives at eight-fifty-two. The kitchen positions are available. In 2022, when everyone had recently remembered that parties existed and were still slightly recalibrating to their own comfort levels within them, this was an entirely ordinary set of decisions to make before going somewhere to have a good time.
