I. Description of Behavior Requesting Recognition
The applicant boards an office shuttle Monday through Friday. The shuttle contains between twelve and twenty seats, all of which are unassigned. The applicant consistently occupies a seat in the second row, window side. This has been the case for approximately eight months.
No seat has been reserved. The applicant made no request. No agreement was reached with other passengers. The seat was simply available on the first day, and then the second, and by the third day the seat had acquired a quality that is difficult to describe but easy to act on.
II. How the System Operates Without Documentation
The applicant does not tell new colleagues about the seat. There is no memo. There is, however, something that functions like a memo: experienced riders give the seat a brief glance before sitting elsewhere. New riders occasionally sit there.
When new riders sit there, experienced riders do not say anything. They exhibit, instead, a brief silence that is qualitatively different from ordinary silence. The new rider receives no information. The new rider nonetheless leaves the situation with information.
III. What Happens When the System Is Violated
A new employee sat in the applicant's seat on a Tuesday in the third month. The applicant sat one row back. Nobody mentioned this. The applicant mentioned it to a colleague at lunch, framing the incident as mildly funny. This framing was accurate and also incomplete.
The conversation at lunch constituted the formal documentation of the rule, which had until that moment existed purely as behavior.
IV. Request
