SECTION I: DESCRIPTION OF BEHAVIOR
The applicant describes the behavior as follows. A basket containing groceries, too heavy to hold continuously, is set on the floor at the start of a queue. The queue moves. The basket must also move. Because lifting the basket and carrying it the full distance to its new position would constitute an admission that the basket is heavy, the basket is instead lifted by the handle, shuffled approximately one basket-length forward, and replaced on the floor.
This process is repeated every 40 to 90 seconds for the duration of the queue.
The basket has moved 4.7 meters across the floor since the applicant joined the queue, none of it in a continuous motion.
SECTION II: JUSTIFICATION FOR RECOGNITION
The behavior meets all criteria for established practice. It is repeated without variation. It is self-sustaining. It has been observed across multiple continents, multiple basket materials, and both hand basket and rolling cart variants. People set a heavy basket on the floor in a queue and repeatedly lift it forward by one place as the line moves. No one designed this system. It arose.
The alternative, which is to carry the basket continuously, was evaluated and rejected at the moment the basket first touched the floor. That moment was 6 minutes ago.
SECTION III: CONSEQUENCES OF RECOGNITION
First, other people in the queue begin anticipating the one-step shuffle and adjust their own basket positions accordingly. Second, when a newcomer joins the queue and simply holds their basket in the air, existing members experience a brief, involuntary evaluative response. Third, the floor acquires a faint record of basket positions, written in minor scuff marks, that serves as spatial evidence of collective agreement.
The basket has acquired social momentum. Picking it up and carrying it continuously would now look like a statement.
SECTION IV: STATUS RECOMMENDATION
The behavior has acquired standing. Removing it would require either a different basket or different expectations about what carrying a basket implies. Neither is available in the queue. Recognition is recommended.
