Observational Essay: Vegetable Vendor Rounding

I.

The spinach costs forty-three rupees. The vendor says forty-five. The buyer hands over fifty. The vendor considers the seven rupees for a moment.

Five is returned.

No one remarks on this. The transaction is complete.

II.

The rounding protocol exists across the city's informal retail economy. It is not posted anywhere. No one was told about it. Everyone operates under it.

The governing rule: any vegetable vendor rounding that works twice in city life becomes an unofficial protocol until conditions change. It has worked more than twice. The protocol is stable.

The final few rupees exist on paper. By mutual agreement, they do not exist at the cart.

III.

The direction of the rounding is the interesting variable. It rounds to the nearest increment that feels natural to both parties at that moment. This is not a formal rounding rule. It is a social one.

Accepting it requires a small, voluntary release of the right to argue about it. That release is the transaction. The vegetables are secondary.

IV.

The buyer who insists on exact change disrupts the protocol. Not because the exact change is wrong, but because insisting names the arrangement out loud. Naming it converts it from a shared assumption into a negotiation. Negotiations are slower.

The workaround develops timing rules, landmarks, and exceptions known only to regular customers. A regular customer does not insist on the four rupees. This is part of being a regular customer.

V.

The city has absorbed thousands of these protocols. Each one is improvised, local, and surprisingly durable. Each one becomes invisible only after it is understood.

Someone new to the neighborhood insists on exact change. A regular customer watches. The regular customer says nothing. The protocol is learned through loss, not explanation.

Soon the city behaves as though the improvised protocol was planned from the beginning.
