Arriving in Five

A look at time, intent, and the modern ritual of vague arrival estimates.

Five minutes is the most flexible unit of time ever invented. It can mean anything from two minutes to forty-five, depending on who is saying it and whether they have found their keys yet.

The Taxonomy

There are several distinct species of "five minutes." The Genuine Five, where someone is actually close. The Optimistic Five, where they have not yet left. The Diplomatic Five, where they are buying time. And the Aspirational Five, where five minutes represents an entire lifestyle change.

The Social Contract

Nobody expects five minutes to mean five minutes. Both parties understand this. The person arriving gets to feel like they tried. The person waiting gets to feel like they cared.

The Arrival

Eventually, the person arrives. They say sorry. You say it's fine. Neither of you addresses the thirty-minute gap between the estimate and reality. This is how civilization works.
