Camera Readiness Ritual Has Been Granted Temporary Authority

Convened by: The Distributed Work Observation Committee Subject: The coworker who rearranges the visible background moments before turning the camera on
CHAIR: What time was the meeting scheduled to begin?
WITNESS: 2:00pm.
CHAIR: And what time did the background rearrangement begin?
WITNESS: 1:53pm.
CHAIR: Seven minutes of preparation for a camera that would be on for forty-five minutes.
WITNESS: The bookshelf needed to be straightened.
CHAIR: Was the bookshelf crooked?
WITNESS: One book was at an angle.
CHAIR: One book.
WITNESS: And the plant needed to be moved left.
CHAIR: Tell me about the plant.
WITNESS: It was slightly out of frame. If it was in frame it looked intentional. Out of frame it looked like I had a half-plant.
CHAIR: The camera readiness ritual consumes more time than anyone planned to admit.
WITNESS: I also adjusted the light.
CHAIR: After the meeting, did anyone comment on the background?
WITNESS: No.
CHAIR: The book? The plant?
WITNESS: No.
CHAIR: A second coordination step appears to manage the first coordination step. The first step is the meeting. The second step is the preparation for being seen at the meeting. The preparation has now acquired more complexity than the meeting itself.
WITNESS: I just wanted it to look professional.
CHAIR: The governing rule states: a camera readiness ritual may expand beyond its purpose if expansion can still be described as alignment. The book was aligned. The plant was aligned. The lighting was aligned.
WITNESS: Yes.
CHAIR: The meeting started two minutes late because you joined at 2:02.
[Pause.]
WITNESS: The plant kept reflecting.
CHAIR: The organization eventually needs a meeting to decide whether the ritual itself should continue. That meeting will not be scheduled.
