TERMS AND CONDITIONS Governing the Practice of Checkout Total Prediction Effective: Since Prices Started Feeling Wrong

Article I. Definitions

"Checkout Total Prediction" means the act of estimating the final bill before the checkout screen displays it, performed as a private test of whether current prices still conform to the subject's internal price model, conducted at every grocery transaction regardless of basket size, complexity, or whether the subject has time for this.

"The Model" means the price memory the subject carries from purchases made before approximately March 2022, which continues to operate as the reference standard despite no longer accurately describing the current market.

Article II. The Governing Rule

Every remembered old price remains legally active as a comparison point until the buyer stops mentioning it. The subject has not stopped. The subject is at checkout. The subject is predicting.

Article III. Standard Procedure

The checkout total prediction proceeds as follows:

  1. Items are placed on the conveyor.
  2. The subject begins a running mental sum, referencing remembered prices for each item.
  3. Some items have increased in price. The increase is known for certain items and estimated for others.
  4. A prediction is produced.
  5. The screen displays the actual total.
  6. The difference between the prediction and the actual total is noted internally.
  7. The difference is attributed to one or more items that moved beyond the subject's price model.
  8. Those items are identified at home by checking the receipt.

Article IV. The Contradiction

The purchase is ordinary, yet each price now feels like evidence in a private economic investigation. The investigation has a consistent finding: prices are higher than remembered. This finding does not close the investigation. It opens the next one.

Article V. The Absurd Rule

Uncertainty may be converted into certainty by checking the same number again under identical conditions. The conditions are: a grocery store, November 2022, a basket of standard household items. The check is the prediction. The conditions are identical each week. The number changes.

Article VI. Enforcement

Eventually checkout total prediction acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. Another household member now asks, when returning from shopping, whether the total was what was expected. This question was never requested. It is now standard.

Article VII. Amendment

These Terms may be amended only when the subject's internal price model has been updated to reflect current prices, at which point prediction accuracy will improve and the investigation will lose its urgency.

The model updates slowly. The investigation will continue for some time.
