What Is Being Classified

Alarm Math Before Bed is the practice of calculating, immediately before or during an attempt to sleep, how many hours of sleep remain if sleep begins now, compared to the hours remaining if sleep begins in five, ten, or twenty minutes.

This practice is performed with a phone screen as the primary instrument.

Why It Is Being Classified

Alarm Math Before Bed has been observed to function in two distinct phases.

In the first phase, the calculation produces a feeling of order. The person knows, with precision, that they will receive seven hours and twelve minutes of sleep if sleep begins now. This is considered better than not knowing. The feeling of order is genuine and lasts approximately forty seconds.

In the second phase, the calculation has been repeated enough times that the original seven hours and twelve minutes has become five hours and forty minutes, and the calculations themselves are now the main obstacle to sleep beginning.

Governing Rule

Under the governing rule, any action framed as the last one before sleep may renew itself once.

Alarm Math Before Bed is always framed as the last one. It is then renewed. The renewal produces another last one.

Classification Status

Alarm Math Before Bed has been classified as a sleep preparation activity on the basis that it occurs before sleep and involves the person in bed.

This classification is administrative. It does not reflect the activity's effect on sleep. That effect is separately documented and has not improved the classification.

Skipping Alarm Math Before Bed later will feel more disruptive than performing it. This is expected behavior.
