Classification Notice for Office Pantry Reconnaissance
A route to the pantry that passes the conference room window is not accidental after the third time.
Classification Notice Re: Office Pantry Reconnaissance Status: Procedure (effective from week three of hybrid return)
This notice classifies office pantry reconnaissance as a standard coordination activity and not as social behavior, avoidance behavior, or neutral nutrition management.
What office pantry reconnaissance is. Someone checks the pantry partly to see who is in before deciding where to sit. The pantry check is not primarily about the pantry. The coffee may or may not be made. The presence of certain colleagues will be determined from the counter by the window. The seating decision follows.
Why classification is required. Office pantry reconnaissance adds one coordination step to the day. Coworkers start planning around that step. Flexibility hardens into an unwritten schedule.
The day is called flexible while requiring extra location planning. This is the classified finding. The hybrid schedule offers choice of location. The choice of location is influenced by who else has chosen to come in. The choice of who to sit near is influenced by who is seen first. The pantry check performs the initial survey that the calendar does not show.
Evidence. The behavior was noted on three consecutive Tuesdays and then on Thursdays. The pantry detour adds approximately ninety seconds to the arrival sequence. The seating choices following pantry reconnaissance differ systematically from seating choices made on days when the person came in after the usual arrival window and went directly to a desk.
Under the governing rule, office pantry reconnaissance becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The reconnaissance has occurred on eleven of the last fourteen in-office days.
Classification level. Routine. No special handling required. The procedure serves its purpose. It is noted here because procedures that are not named tend to be underestimated.
