Classification Notice for Puzzle Difficulty Debate

Daily game difficulty is compared across players as though a shared objective measure exists.

CLASSIFICATION NOTICE

Subject: Puzzle difficulty debate. Classification: recurring daily social appointment, operating under the informal authority of streak-based participation.

The puzzle is the same for all participants on a given day. The grid, the answer, the letter set, and the rules are identical across all players. The difficulty experienced by each participant is not identical across all players. The difficulty depends on which letters a player starts with, which words are considered first, and whether the answer fell early or late in the session. These variables differ by participant.

The post-game difficulty debate treats these variables as a shared experience. It proceeds as though the puzzle's objective difficulty can be established by polling the group. It cannot. The poll is, in practice, a comparison of player performance expressed in the vocabulary of puzzle quality.

The consequences are as follows. Puzzle difficulty debate occupies one protected pocket of the morning. The pocket is the ten minutes after the streak is recorded, before the workday begins. Other routines start moving around that pocket. The coffee preparation, the brief news scan, the first inbox check, have all shifted to accommodate the debrief that follows game completion. A tiny game becomes a daily obligation, not because the game requires attendance but because the debrief does.

The governing contradiction: the game is called casual. The word casual means no commitment, no stakes, no obligation to return. Casualness is the product's primary framing. Missing a day costs nothing except the streak. The streak is a number. The number has no external value. And yet: missing it feels like a small failure, and the small failure is substantial enough to reorganize a morning around preventing it, and the debrief is substantial enough to schedule.

Under the governing rule, puzzle difficulty debate becomes procedure once repetition has occurred on three consecutive mornings. That threshold was reached in the second week.

The classification is effective immediately. The debrief is a standing appointment.
