What Is Classified
The placement of a shared snack bowl at a table, couch, or common seating surface has been classified as a matter of standing arrangement rather than incidental positioning. Specifically: the bowl is placed within arm's reach of the person most likely to reach for it, and this placement recurs across sessions with sufficient regularity to constitute policy.
Why Classification Was Necessary
Classification was not declared. It accumulated.
The first accommodation was small. Someone noticed that the bowl sat one seat away and moved it slightly closer. The food was ordinary. The adjustment took two seconds. No one commented.
The second accommodation made the first one teachable. A different person, setting out the bowl on a subsequent occasion, placed it in the same position without being instructed to do so, having inferred the correct location from prior observation. The bowl arrived at arm's reach before anyone sat down. This was considered correct.
By the third session, the bowl's position had acquired the properties of an assigned seat: recognized, expected, and mildly contested if deviated from. One person placed the bowl at the center of the table, equidistant from all participants. This was noted as unusual. No one moved it. The remark was made anyway.
Current Classification Status
Snack bowl geography is considered stable once removing it would require an explicit conversation. That threshold was passed between the second and third sessions described above. Explicit conversation has not occurred.
The behavior is therefore classified as standard procedure. The standard is maintained by proximity, repetition, and the mild discomfort of non-compliance rather than by any formal agreement.
Conditions for Reclassification
Reclassification may occur if:
- The seating arrangement changes such that no position is arm's reach for more than one participant simultaneously.
- Someone directly proposes a different placement and survives the resulting discussion.
- The bowl is no longer involved. Reclassification on this basis would apply to all objects subject to similar geographic expectations.
