Description of Classified Behavior
Summer curtain defense is the practice of drawing curtains to a partially closed position sufficient to reduce direct sunlight while preserving enough ambient light to avoid activating the room's electrical lighting.
The optimal curtain position varies by time of day, sun angle, and the resident's specific tolerance for heat relative to their tolerance for darkness. The position is not measured. It is found by adjustment. The resident closes the curtain, assesses the result, and makes a correction. This process takes between five and twenty seconds.
Classification Basis
The behavior is minor enough to seem accidental, but repetition turns it into reliable local knowledge that others depend upon. A second resident in the household now knows which curtains to adjust and at what approximate angle. They know this because they observed the first resident's adjustments without being instructed. The information transferred through proximity.
A small workaround was created: the main curtain is left at the classified position between approximately 2pm and 5pm so neither resident needs to re-perform the calibration on entry. The workaround produced a second check, which is the practice of confirming the curtain position when entering the room during this period before deciding whether to adjust the lighting.
Soon the ordinary action of entering a sunlit room has a parallel administrative system built around summer curtain defense.
Conditions of Classification
Under the governing rule, summer curtain defense may continue indefinitely once everyone in the household knows how to work around it. Both residents have this knowledge.
If summer ends, the classification lapses. It resumes the following May without requiring reauthorization.
