Classification Notice for Undo Confidence
Classification: Behavioral — Digital Interface Habit Subject: Undo Confidence Effective: Upon the second riskier edit attributed to available undo functionality
What Is Being Classified
Undo Confidence: the condition in which a person's willingness to make an edit is directly proportional to their belief that the edit can be reversed.
The undo button exists. The undo button works. The undo button has therefore become a negotiating position rather than a last resort.
Behavioral Profile
The user selects all. The user notices, a moment later, that they selected all in a context where selecting all was risky. The user does not stop and reconsider. The user continues, because Cmd+Z is available.
This is not irrational. Undo works frequently. The user has data.
The data does not include the cases where undo was not available, undo was available but did not capture recent clipboard history, undo worked but only partially, or the user undid too far and created a new problem while fixing the original one.
Those cases exist. They have not updated the user's confidence level.
The Workaround
After one near-incident, the user created a workaround: duplicate the file before making a large change.
This workaround is used approximately one third of the time.
The other two thirds, the user proceeds under the assumption that undo will cover it.
Habit has preserved the workaround through two interface updates. The user now duplicates files in an application that has excellent version history, rendering the duplication unnecessary. They do it anyway.
Interface Update Note
A cleaner interface was introduced. It has native undo with thirty-second granularity. The user uses it through the old workaround pattern: large edit, Cmd+Z, then the file duplication habit that runs in parallel.
The new interface is not bad. The user has simply not updated their relationship with it.
Undo Confidence is classified as standard behavioral policy from the second riskier edit onward. The undo button is aware of this. The undo button has no opinion about it.
