Classification of Appointment Tab Preservation
Appointment tab preservation is distinct from forgetting to close a tab. It is a deliberate act performed to prevent a different, more costly deliberate act.
SECTION 1. DEFINITIONS
"Appointment tab preservation" means the practice of leaving a browser tab open to a booking confirmation, calendar invite, or scheduling page after the original purpose of opening that tab has been fulfilled, with the intent of using the tab as a reference point at a future time that has not been specified.
"Closing the tab" means the action that is available at all times and is not taken.
"The other method" means the email confirmation, calendar application, or memory that would serve as the reference point if the tab were closed, and which would require a separate action to locate.
SECTION 2. SCOPE
These terms apply to any tab left open to a scheduling confirmation, a video call link, a clinic address, a restaurant reservation, or any similar appointment-adjacent page where the information on the page is understood to be temporary but the cost of losing access to it is understood to be disproportionate.
These terms do not apply to tabs left open through inattention. Appointment tab preservation is a deliberate retention decision, not a failure to close.
SECTION 3. THE CLASSIFICATION PROBLEM
Others may observe the preserved tab and classify it as clutter. This classification is not entirely wrong. The tab is occupying space in the browser window alongside tabs that serve no current purpose and have not served one in several days. From the outside, appointment tab preservation is indistinguishable from general tab accumulation.
From the inside, the distinction is clear. The tab is not open. It is filed.
SECTION 4. ACKNOWLEDGED LIMITATIONS
The user acknowledges that closing the tab and then locating the information through the confirmation email would take approximately forty-five seconds. The user acknowledges that this is not a meaningful cost. The user acknowledges that the tab may be accidentally closed before the appointment occurs, at which point the other method becomes the only method, and the forty-five seconds are spent anyway.
The user acknowledges all of this and retains the tab regardless, because closing it requires a level of confidence in the other method that is not currently available.
SECTION 5. DURATION
Appointment tab preservation remains in force until the appointment occurs, at which point the tab is closed with a feeling that is proportionate to no task that was actually performed.
These terms do not expire before the appointment.
