Classification of Ticket Context Decay as Normal Conduct
An engineer opened a six-month-old ticket and spent longer rebuilding context than the original task was meant to take.
What Would Have Happened If the Ticket Had Been Documented Properly
The ticket was opened on March 4.
The title read: "Investigate auth timeout on low-traffic instances." The description contained one sentence: "See Slack thread." The Slack thread, at time of writing, contained eleven messages across two channels. The original message linked to a log snippet. The log snippet linked to a specific deployment hash.
The deployment hash was not annotated.
What would have happened if the ticket had been documented at the time it was opened:
The engineer who found the behavior would have written three sentences. These sentences would have described: what the error was, when it started, and what was ruled out. This would have taken six minutes.
What happened instead:
The ticket sat for six months. Context sat inside the heads of three engineers who had since moved to other work. The Slack thread was archived under a channel that was later renamed. The deployment hash referenced a branch that was merged and superseded.
What happened when the ticket was reopened in September:
The engineer assigned the ticket opened it at 10:15am. At 10:17am, the engineer navigated to the Slack thread. At 10:26am, the engineer located the original channel under its new name. At 10:48am, the engineer found the log snippet. The log snippet referenced a configuration value. The configuration value had changed in April.
At 11:30am, the engineer concluded that the original problem may no longer exist. A note was added to the ticket.
The note read: "May be resolved by April config change. Needs verification."
The ticket was assigned back to the queue.
The governing rule applies: a technical shortcut may remain temporary for as long as nobody writes down its expiration condition. The context was not temporary. The context decayed because nobody preserved it. The preservation would have cost less than the reconstruction.
The ticket remains open.
