This analysis addresses a behavioral pattern encountered by investigators across demographic and occupational categories: the act of picking up a phone, unlocking it using the established authentication method, experiencing a momentary absence of the intent that prompted the unlock, and replacing the phone without having performed any action.
The pattern is classified as token unlock confusion. It is distinguished from distracted phone use by the absence of distraction. No competing stimulus is present. The intent simply fails to survive the interval between the decision to unlock and the completion of the unlock.
Findings.
The first finding concerns interval duration. The authentication interval, measured from the decision to pick up the phone to the moment the home screen is visible, ranges from one to three seconds depending on the authentication method. The intent fails within this interval in a majority of documented cases. The interval is not long enough to explain the failure by reference to competing tasks.
The second finding is behavioral. Upon losing the intent, users do not wait for recovery. They perform a brief scan of the home screen, open no applications, and lock the phone. In some cases, they open one application they did not intend to open, close it, and then lock the phone. The outcome is identical in both cases.
The third finding concerns recurrence. In approximately forty percent of cases, the original intent is recovered within ninety seconds, prompting a second unlock sequence. In this second instance, the intent survives.
The absurd rule that this pattern produces is a two-unlock protocol for tasks that require one.
The contradiction is that the authentication method was designed to protect access to the phone's contents, and it now functions additionally as a disruption of the mental state required to use those contents.
