Classification of Workday Curtain Setting
A person working from home adjusts the curtain at the start of each workday to a position that is not fully open and not fully closed. They have done this every weekday for eleven months. They have not thought about it.
Terms and Conditions Governing Workday Curtain Setting Effective Upon First Deployment. Binding Without Signature.
Section 1: Scope
These terms govern the establishment, maintenance, and behavioral consequences of a curtain position that has become a fixed precondition of productive work in a home workspace.
By deploying the curtain setting for more than fourteen consecutive workdays, the user agrees to all applicable conditions.
Section 2: The Observation
A person working from home discovered, approximately eleven months ago, that setting the curtain to the two-thirds closed position reduced screen glare while preserving enough ambient light to make the space feel functional rather than enclosed.
This was a practical adjustment. It addressed a real problem.
Section 3: When a Practical Adjustment Becomes a Condition
The adjustment worked. It was repeated. Repetition produced a faint but measurable dependency such that on days when the curtain was not set before the first meeting, focus arrived later than usual and the first hour felt unresolved.
The person cannot confirm the curtain is the cause. They do not investigate this question. They set the curtain.
Section 4: Propagation
The curtain setting governs not only screen glare but the ambient signal that work has started. Skipping it is equivalent to beginning a meeting without closing the previous application window. Technically permissible. Structurally uncomfortable.
The curtain position is now load-bearing in a way the curtain was not designed to be.
Section 5: The Measured Alarm
The condition of concern is not the curtain setting itself, which costs four seconds and harms no one. The condition of concern is the architecture of dependency that has grown around a four-second action such that its absence registers as meaningful.
There are now seventeen such preconditions required before work begins. Each costs between four and forty seconds. Together they occupy twelve to twenty-one minutes of each workday. None of them are on a list. None were decided. They arrived.
Section 6: The Absurd Governance
Two productivity systems in active use on this person's devices include a morning routine builder. One was configured in early 2020. It does not include the curtain setting. The other was configured in late 2020. It does not include the curtain setting. Neither system was consulted before the curtain setting was adopted.
The curtain setting governs the day. The systems do not know it exists.
Section 7: Known Consequences
First: the user cannot replicate their productive workspace in a location that does not have the curtain. Second: guests who adjust the curtain during the day are corrected with more firmness than the situation appears to require. Third: the user has begun evaluating potential new apartments partly on the basis of window orientation.
Section 8: No Revision Contemplated
These terms remain in force for the duration of home-based work and for any period following in which the habits formed during home-based work persist, which is expected to be indefinitely.
