Incident Summary
A review of the cleaning supply cabinet conducted on the occasion of its failure to close has produced findings that warrant documentation. The cabinet contains twenty-three cleaning products. The household has eleven surfaces that require cleaning.
This report covers the current state of the stockpile, the circumstances of its accumulation, and the gap between the two numbers above.
Background
Cleaning supply purchasing accelerated in early 2020 and has not decelerated. The initial acceleration was rational. Surfaces were cleaned more frequently. Supply chains were uncertain. A reserve seemed prudent.
The supply chain has normalized. The cleaning frequency has normalized. The purchasing has not.
Current Inventory Assessment
Four products are labeled for the same surface. Two have identical ingredients. The price difference between them is $3.79, which has not been explained.
Three products were purchased at the beginning of a project to address a specific cleaning challenge. The challenge was resolved. The products remain. They are specialty items with no secondary application.
Two products were purchased because they were on sale, in quantities that reflected a belief that the sale price justified a volume that would take fourteen months to consume. This belief was correct. This did not prevent an additional purchase of the same product at full price in September.
The cabinet does not close fully. This has been the case since July. No investigation was opened at that time.
Consequence 1: Redundancy
Seven products in the cabinet can be substituted for each other without measurable difference in outcome. None will be discarded before they are empty. They will not all be empty at the same time.
Consequence 2: Specialized Products Without Occasions
Two products require a specific type of surface that the household does not have. Their presence is unexplained by the occupants when asked. The most common explanation offered is that they were on sale.
Consequence 3: Storage Architecture Degradation
The cabinet was designed for approximately twelve products. Its current load exceeds that design capacity by eleven units. Items placed in the cabinet now require a specific extraction protocol to avoid triggering a secondary cascade of adjacent products.
The extraction protocol has not been documented. It is known only to the person who last reorganized the cabinet. That person is traveling through December 22nd.
Governing Rule
A cleaning supply becomes a cleaning supply stockpile at the moment it exceeds the household's capacity to use it within a calendar year. This rule exists. Nobody applies it at the point of purchase.
Contradiction
The stockpile represents the household's preparedness for cleaning. The stockpile has made the cabinet responsible for a minor structural hazard. These two facts coexist without irony.
