What Is Being Classified
The set of behaviors that occur between the delivery bag arriving at the door and the bag being either discarded, returned, or stored for return, with particular attention to the sequence in which items are removed, where they are placed during the interim, and how the bag itself is handled at the end.
How the Practice Arrived
The first grocery delivery occurred in April 2020. The bag was unpacked immediately, items placed directly in the kitchen, bag folded and placed in a drawer. The process took four minutes.
The process now takes eleven minutes and involves a staging surface, a cold-chain prioritization rule, a label review for items that are frequently substituted, and a procedure for the bags themselves that depends on whether they are paper, plastic, or insulated.
Nobody decided this would be the procedure. It became the procedure because it worked once and was repeated.
The Governing Rule
Any container that enters the home more than twice per week will be given a procedure it did not come with. The delivery bag is a temporary vessel. It has acquired permanent handling rules.
The cold items go directly to the refrigerator or freezer. This is not a rule; it is obvious. It was stated as obvious once, to a person who placed a yogurt on the counter while checking their phone, and has since functioned as a rule.
The Bag Question
Insulated bags are returned to the delivery person or left at the door for collection. Paper bags are broken down and placed in the recycling. Plastic bags are stored in a specific bag-of-bags location until there are too many, at which point they are taken to the supermarket recycling point.
The bag-of-bags location has moved twice. Its current location is known to both members of the household. Its previous locations are not referenced.
Evidence of Escalation
The delivery is supposed to eliminate a trip, yet the bag arriving requires a process that did not exist before home delivery became routine. The process eliminates the trip. The process is not the trip. The process is a different thing that now takes eleven minutes of coordinated effort, has a governing rule about cold-chain priority, and produces a bag-of-bags that requires periodic clearance.
The trip took twenty-five minutes and produced no bag-of-bags.
Current Status
The practice is stable. No review is pending. The system operates without discussion and both members of the household know their roles, though neither could state when the roles were assigned.
The delivery arrives Thursday. The staging surface will be cleared by Thursday afternoon.
