Background
The pact was established in Q2 2021 following an incident in which the air conditioning was adjusted during a call, producing an audible click and a brief moment in which the person on the call could not hear the person on the call. The incident was minor. The pact was not.
Current Terms
Temperature adjustments are deferred until the active call has concluded. In households with multiple calls occurring simultaneously, adjustments are further deferred until both parties have concluded their respective calls. The determination of when both calls are concluded is made informally, through the exchange of small signals that have not been formalized but are understood.
A temporary workaround for home office temperature pact became the default because it worked once. The workaround is the pact itself. There is no longer a distinction between the workaround and the procedure.
Observed Consequence
A one-time check for compliance with the pact is added before the ordinary task of adjusting the temperature can continue. Other people have begun planning around the pact and quietly preserving it. Uncertainty may be reduced only by adding a second check that creates a third question. The second check is the confirmation that no call is imminent, which requires knowledge of the afternoon schedule, which requires consulting a calendar, which the pact now implicitly requires before any temperature decision.
The Contradiction
The home setup is meant to simplify work, but every boundary requires another ritual. The office was meant to be convenient. The convenience has a management layer.
Status
Pact remains active. No formal review has been scheduled. A person using the ordinary method, which is to adjust the temperature when cold, must now explain why they ignored the standing arrangement. The explanation is rarely given. The arrangement is simply followed.
