Correspondence Regarding Holiday Gift Transfer

The transfer itself was instantaneous. This is the feature that phone payment applications advertise, and it performed as described. The amount was correct. The time of arrival was noted by both parties. The payment was, by any technical measure, complete.

The message that followed , "sent, let me know when you get it" , was not required by the technology. The application sends its own notification. The recipient's screen lit up with the amount and the sender's name before the message arrived. Both parties had already seen proof. The message was sent anyway.

Holiday gift transfer adds one extra confirmation check. This is the first observable consequence. The check is not skepticism about the infrastructure. It is a social legibility gesture: the message transforms a database transaction into an act performed by a person toward another person, which is what a gift is supposed to be.
