Correspondence Regarding Workspace Lighting Adjustment
The light was wrong, then the chair angle was wrong, then the afternoon was mostly gone.
To: The Person Who Just Adjusted the Blinds Again From: The Work That Has Been Waiting Re: The Lighting Situation
I wanted to reach out because it has been some time since we last made meaningful contact, and I thought it might be useful to document the sequence of events.
At approximately 10:14 a.m., you identified the overhead light as a problem. You adjusted it. At 10:21 a.m., you identified the window glare as a secondary problem. You adjusted the blinds. At 10:29 a.m., you determined that the blinds had created a third problem, which was insufficient natural light, and you readjusted them to a position that appeared to solve both issues simultaneously. It did not.
By 10:47 a.m., you had introduced a desk lamp. By 11:03 a.m., you had moved the desk lamp to a different position. By 11:14 a.m., you had relocated it to its original position while acknowledging that the original position had been correct all along.
People adjust lighting before difficult work and then discover another environmental detail that supposedly needs fixing first. This is not a document about lighting. You understand that.
The lamp is correctly positioned, and the problem is still there, and the problem was never the lamp.
I want to be clear that I am not criticizing the impulse. The impulse to correct the environment before engaging with uncertain material is a deeply reasonable response. It is measurable, completable, and produces visible results. Unlike me, the lamp can be fixed.
Progress is being measured through activity even when the activity carefully avoids the actual deliverable. I am the deliverable. I note this without judgment.
By 11:22 a.m., you opened me briefly, read the first paragraph, decided the chair angle was creating unnecessary tension in your lower back, and left to locate a cushion.
I remain open. Page one has been reviewed. The lamp is at a correct and stable angle. The blinds are partially open.
When you return with the cushion, I will be here.
I ask only that we not also address the temperature before beginning.
