Field Notes: Digital Clutter Weekend Review and Outcome Assessment

Compiled following completion of the designated weekend period

Stated Objective

The person designated the weekend of August 27-28 as a Digital Clutter Weekend. The stated objective was to address accumulated digital disorder across three primary domains: photo library organization, email inbox management, and the Downloads folder. A fourth informal objective, addressing the desktop, was added on Saturday morning.

The weekend is over.

Domain-by-Domain Assessment

Photos (2019): Four hours were spent reorganizing the folder structure for photos from 2019. The photos from 2019 are now in a folder called 2019 inside a folder called Photos, inside a folder called Archive, inside a folder called Old Archive. The system is internally consistent. The system is different from the previous system in ways that are not immediately apparent. Photos from 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022 were not addressed.

Email Inbox: Forty-seven emails were processed on Saturday morning. Seventeen were archived. Twelve were deleted. Eighteen were moved to a folder called "To Handle" that the person created during this process and has not returned to. The inbox count decreased from 1,203 to 1,156 and has since returned to 1,171 due to emails received during the weekend.

Downloads Folder: The Downloads folder was not addressed. The Downloads folder has not been addressed since 2018. It contains 847 items. The person opened it on Sunday afternoon, assessed the scope of the project, and closed it.

Desktop: Six files were moved from the desktop to folders. The folders were created during the move. Two of the folders were created with the same name in different locations. This has not been resolved.

The Absurd Rule

Digital clutter cannot be fully addressed in a weekend because digital clutter is not produced in a weekend. It is produced continuously, at a rate that exceeds the rate at which any periodic intervention can address it. A Digital Clutter Weekend addresses historical clutter while current clutter accumulates. The net position at the end of the weekend is marginally better than the position at the beginning, and materially similar to the position two weeks prior to the beginning.

The next Digital Clutter Weekend is expected to be scheduled sometime next quarter.

The Contradiction

The person felt better at the end of Saturday. The folder for 2019 photos was organized. The inbox was smaller. The feeling of progress was genuine, because progress had been made. The progress was real and also insufficient.

The Downloads folder remains. It has 847 items. It will have approximately 900 items by the time the next Digital Clutter Weekend occurs. This is known. The Downloads folder will be addressed then.
