Distant Drilling Attention Has Acquired Standing
Three scenes from the morning a pause in construction noise became the loudest thing in the room.
I.
It was 10:14 AM when the drilling stopped.
The drilling had been present for forty minutes before the pause made it audible. In those forty minutes, the person at the desk had written eleven emails, attended one video call, eaten a banana, and experienced the drilling as something between weather and furniture: real, persistent, and beneath notice.
At 10:14, the drilling stopped.
The person looked up.
II.
The pause lasted eleven seconds. In that time, the person at the desk had closed a browser tab, turned toward the window, and begun listening. Not for anything specific. Listening to confirm that the silence was real, that the drilling had stopped, and to determine whether it would return.
The absurd rule governing distant drilling attention states that once a recurring environmental sound is noticed through its absence, it cannot be unnoticed for the remainder of the session. The sound was now governed by attention. It had become an object of monitoring. A parallel administrative system had formed around the absence of a sound that had been absent for eleven seconds.
At 10:14:11, the drilling resumed.
This produced no reaction whatsoever.
III.
The person returned to the email they had been writing. The drilling continued. It was absorbed immediately, folded back into the background, the same background it had occupied for the previous forty minutes without incident.
At 10:31, the drilling stopped again. For five seconds.
The person looked up.
At 10:31:05, the drilling resumed. The person registered this and looked back at the screen. The email took twelve additional minutes to complete, which is longer than it would have taken before 10:14.
Distant drilling attention had acquired standing. It was present for the remainder of the working session. It will be present in any future session where distant drilling is audible and then pauses. The original forty uninterrupted minutes of background noise left no record in the person's attention.
The pause left a different kind of record entirely.
