Field Notes on AI Tool Tab Count

Multiple open AI sessions for one task records the same task's fragmentation across contexts that never converged.

Field observation, November 2023. Subject: a standard browser session during active work hours. Tab count pertaining to the current task: four. Tab count pertaining to AI assistance for the current task: three. Whether these are the same tabs is a question the field researcher initially declined to pursue.

AI tool tab count is the condition of having several AI chat sessions open simultaneously for the same piece of work because each one drifted in a different direction and none of them became definitively wrong. The tabs persist rather than close. Closing one requires acknowledging that it failed, which requires knowing what success looks like, which is the question the tabs were opened to answer.

AI tool tab count adds one private manual check. The check is the synthesis task that the tabs could not perform for themselves. One session proposed an approach. A second session proposed a refinement of that approach that contradicts the first session's framing. A third session asked a clarifying question and then answered it incorrectly. The check involves reading all three, identifying which parts are usable, combining them in a way that requires no further attribution, and producing something that does not visibly bear the marks of its origin.

That check becomes part of the normal workflow. This is the second field observation. The synthesis task is not acknowledged as such. It appears in the worker's schedule as "reviewing and editing," which is accurate at the level of description and silent about the underlying activity.

The help is useful enough to use and awkward enough to disguise. Office AI use spread faster than disclosure etiquette in 2023, which means the gap between what workers were doing and what they were prepared to describe themselves doing was at an unusual width. AI tool tab count is visible evidence of that gap from the outside, and invisible from within it.

Assisted work becomes routine while disclosure stays exceptional. Under the governing rule, AI tool tab count becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The tabs remain open. The task continues. The third session has generated a phrase that might be useful if the worker can remember which session produced it.
