Field Notes on Biscuit Tea Dip

The biscuit is being dipped into the tea. This is the third dip of this biscuit. Each dip has increased the structural risk. The biscuit is committed.

FIELD NOTE 1: The Physics

A biscuit in tea undergoes absorption. The absorbed tea softens the biscuit at the surface and progresses inward. At a critical point, the softened section can no longer support the weight of the dry section above it. The dry section falls.

The critical point is determined by: biscuit thickness, biscuit density, tea temperature, and dip duration. These variables interact to produce a failure window.

The failure window for a standard Marie biscuit in 70-degree tea is approximately 1.5 to 2.5 seconds on the third dip, depending on previous dip saturation.

FIELD NOTE 2: The Confidence Escalation

Dip 1 was cautious: one second, controlled extraction, successful. The biscuit was intact.

Dip 2 inherited the confidence of Dip 1 plus the subjective experience that the previous dip was fine. Duration increased to 1.5 seconds. The biscuit held.

Dip 3 inherited the confidence of Dip 2 plus the subjective experience that 1.5 seconds was fine. Duration increased to 1.8 seconds. The biscuit's remaining structural margin was not sufficient.

FIELD NOTE 3: The Event

The base separated at 1.8 seconds. The lower half of the biscuit entered the tea. The tea now contains: two small biscuit fragments, tea-colored softened biscuit material, and residual crumb.

FIELD NOTE 4: The Response

The tea was still consumed. The biscuit fragments at the bottom were noted as a texture at the end of the cup. The loss was minor.

The next biscuit was dipped for one second per dip. The lesson lasted approximately four minutes before the duration drifted upward again.
