Field Notes on Boarding Queue Early
The boarding announcement was for Group 3. This is Group 2. Group 2 is standing in the Group 3 line anyway.
FIELD NOTE 1: The Announcement
Group 3 was called at 10:47am. The gate agent's voice was clear. The boarding sign changed to Group 3. This information was received by approximately forty people in the gate area.
Approximately twelve of the forty were not in Group 3.
FIELD NOTE 2: The Standing Logic
The standing logic is as follows: the queue is the active system. The seats are the waiting system. Being in the queue means being in the system. Being in the seats means being outside the system.
The queue position when your group is called determines how early in your group you board. Boarding earlier means better overhead bin access and a less cramped boarding experience.
The Group 2 passenger's calculation: Group 2 will be called in approximately four minutes. Being in the queue now means being four minutes ahead of Group 2 members who wait for the Group 2 call. The disadvantage: standing for four minutes in a queue that is processing Group 3.
FIELD NOTE 3: The Gate Agent
The gate agent has asked Group 2 passengers to return to their seats twice this boarding session. Both times, the passenger acknowledged the request and stepped back slightly without fully returning to the seating area.
The gate agent has not escalated. The queue is moving. The Group 2 passenger is at the front of the line when Group 2 is called.
FIELD NOTE 4: The Outcome
The Group 2 passenger boarded at 10:52am, approximately three minutes before most Group 2 passengers. The overhead bin above their seat was available.
The standing produced the expected result. The gate agent's request was complied with in the softest possible interpretation of compliance.
