Field Notes on Chair With Clothes

Site: Bedroom, southwest corner Object Under Observation: One chair, wooden, originally purchased for sitting Current Function: Third Clothing State Holding Facility Date of Transition: Unclear. Possibly gradual.

Day One of Observation

The chair contains: one pair of jeans worn for approximately six hours in a clean environment, one cardigan that is technically clean but has absorbed some ambient smell of the day, and a shirt worn briefly before a plan was cancelled and the outfit was reconsidered.

None of these items qualify for the laundry basket. They were worn, but not in a way that constitutes laundering-level wear.

None of these items qualify for the wardrobe. They were worn. Returning them to the wardrobe feels incorrect, like logging a meeting that didn't happen.

The chair is the only available category.

Day Three of Observation

The chair has gained: one additional pair of jeans, a hoodie, and a scarf whose laundry status is unclear because it has not been washed in a period the resident does not wish to calculate.

Other objects in the room have begun adjusting position in relation to the chair. A bag leans slightly away from the chair to preserve access. The wardrobe door opens to a width that accommodates the chair's expanding footprint.

Formal Classification

The third clothing state (worn-but-not-dirty) has no institutional support in household design. There is no designated infrastructure for it. The chair is infrastructure.

The behavior becomes mandatory after its first objection is ignored. One resident said "I should deal with that." That was the objection. The chair remains.

Notes on Removal

Removing the chair from its current function would require:

  1. Deciding the fate of each item currently on it
  2. Laundering items that have graduated to laundry
  3. Creating a new system for the items that have not
  4. Either creating said system or waiting to see if another surface volunteers

Item three has not been resolved. The chair remains.

Normal use of the chair — that is, sitting in it — would now look like a territorial violation. No one has sat in the chair in six weeks.
