Field Notes on Dish Soaking

The dish was put to soak after dinner. It is now the next morning. The soaking has been complete for approximately fourteen hours. The dish remains in the sink.

FIELD NOTE 1: The Purpose

Soaking serves a function: it softens dried or stuck food so that cleaning requires less effort. The optimal soak time for most dishes is approximately fifteen to twenty minutes. After twenty minutes, additional soaking produces diminishing returns. The dish is ready.

FIELD NOTE 2: The Transition

The transition from soaking to cleaning requires: noticing the dish, deciding to clean it, and cleaning it. These three steps are typically completed immediately after a meal, during which time the dish is visible and the context supports cleaning. If the meal ends and other things happen, the transition is delayed.

FIELD NOTE 3: The Extended Soak

The dish was placed in water at 9pm and was not cleaned before the cook went to sleep. This is an extended soak. During an extended soak, the water cools, the soaking function ceases to provide benefit, and the dish waits in a state that is no longer purposeful soaking and is not yet cleaning.

At 8am, the dish is in cold water. The food residue that was softened at 9:20pm is now in a different state: softened, then returned to room temperature, then left in cold water overnight. The dish is as easy to clean as it was at 9:20pm. The overnight period has not changed the cleaning difficulty. It has changed nothing about the dish.

FIELD NOTE 4: The Cleaning

The dish is cleaned at 8:14am. It takes three minutes. The food residue, softened the night before, comes off easily. The cleaning that would have taken three minutes at 9:20pm takes three minutes at 8:14am.

The extended soak produced no additional cleaning benefit. It produced a dish in the sink for eleven hours.

The dish is clean. The sink is available. This is the intended outcome. The path to it took eleven hours longer than necessary.
