Field Notes on Friend Group Restart
The group met for the first time in sixteen months. It took four weeks to schedule.

Background
This review covers the period between the last meeting and the most recent one. The last meeting was August 2020. The most recent meeting was April 2022. The intervening period was not planned. It happened because of a sequence of conditions, then habits, then habits persisting after the conditions ended.
The group has five members. All five were present at the most recent meeting. This is the first time all five have been present at the same location since the last meeting.
Scheduling
The meeting was proposed in mid-March. The proposal received immediate positive responses from all five members. The scheduling required four weeks and twenty-three messages.
The first proposed date had two conflicts. The second proposed date had one conflict that could not be moved. The third date worked but the venue was unavailable. The fourth date and venue worked. Five adults with good intentions and functional calendars required four weeks and twenty-three messages to meet once.
The Meeting
The meeting was good. This statement requires qualification.
The first twenty minutes contained an adjustment period during which conversational patterns were reestablished. Some conversation habits had drifted. A running reference from the previous meeting required a brief explanation that it did not previously require. This is documentation of change, not complaint.
The conversation discovered that everyone had changed by approximately the same amount in approximately the same directions. Three members now have opinions about their rent situation that they did not previously have, and the opinions are all different. Two members have changed jobs. All five have a different relationship to going out than they had in 2019 and are uncertain whether this is a temporary or permanent change.
Review of the Gap
First finding: sixteen months of group absence did not close the friendships. This is the finding that matters.
Second finding: sixteen months of group absence is not recovered in one meeting. The meeting started the recovery. It was not the recovery.
Third finding: the group's WhatsApp chat had 2,100 messages during the gap period. The messages were Wordle scores, news links, and content from other places. None of them contained the information that was exchanged at the meeting. The chat was maintenance. The meeting was the thing.
On the Logistics Problem
The scheduling difficulty is real and is not a symptom of reduced investment in the group. It is a symptom of five people having more fixed obligations than they had at the group's formation. The group was formed when schedules were more flexible. The schedules are no longer flexible. The group has not updated its operating assumptions to reflect this.
Governing Rule
The meeting happened. The gap is not closed. It is acknowledged and set aside, which is the available resolution. The gap will appear in references and callbacks at intervals, marked by a brief pause, and then the conversation will continue.
Contradiction
The group discussed, at the meeting, how it should meet more regularly. It agreed. A date was proposed. No date was confirmed.
Outlook
Another meeting is expected in Q3 or Q4. Scheduling will begin approximately five weeks before the intended date. The meeting will be good.
