Field Notes on Office Kitchen Overlap
Two people entering a small shared space at the same time rediscovered the art of the brief negotiation.
Location: Office kitchen, approximately 3.2 by 4.1 meters Observation Period: Morning, between 9:45 and 10:30
The kitchen has two entry points but one effective path to the counter. The counter holds the kettle, the coffee machine, and a small rack of mugs. The space between the entry point and the counter accommodates one person without adjustment.
Two people arrive.
The first physical adjustment is small. One person moves slightly to the left, not because the counter is to the left, but because moving to the left creates clearance. The second person acknowledges the clearance with a brief forward lean and then holds the position while the kettle fills.
This is a negotiation. It uses no words.
The activity is ordinary again while the body still performs a brief calculation at the threshold that it did not perform three years earlier. In 2020 the kitchen was empty. The calculation was not required. The body did not develop a threshold calculation for a space it never shared. In 2023, the calculation is present and is performed automatically, which is how calculations become invisible while remaining active.
Under the governing rule, office kitchen overlap becomes procedure once the two-person adjustment has been mirrored three times. Mirroring here means: a second coworker adopts the same left-lean without being asked, having observed the first coworker perform it. By the third week, the lean is the norm. Nobody proposed it.
Nearby people begin replicating the adjustment. The replication happens through exposure, not instruction. The kitchen has an etiquette now. The etiquette is the lean.
The room develops etiquette nobody has formally announced, which is the only kind of etiquette that holds. Announced etiquette requires buy-in. This kind requires only proximity and observation, which are already present.
The kettle boils. Both people complete their tasks. The kitchen empties. The etiquette remains, available for the next overlap, which will happen at approximately 10:15 tomorrow.
