Field Notes on Renewal Email Skim

Notes from the recurring encounter with a billing reminder that is read without being processed.

Field Notes: Renewal Email Skim Observed condition. Recurring. No end date established.

Observation 1

The email arrives on a Thursday. Subject line: "Your subscription renews in 7 days." The email is opened. The first two lines are read. The email is archived. The charge will arrive in seven days.

Observation 2

Someone skims a renewal reminder and still feels surprised when the charge happens. The charge was announced. The announcement was received. The skim was a form of reading. The surprise is therefore not informational. It is the gap between registering and processing, which the skim closed for the former and left open for the latter.

Observation 3

The service feels optional each day while billing treats it as permanent. This is the structural condition. On any given day, the service is one decision away from cancellation. On the day the charge arrives, the decision has been made. The decision was made by not making it.

Observation 4

Renewal email skim survives one more billing cycle. The household absorbs the charge. It is not disputed.

Observation 5

The household starts planning around its continued existence. A service initially described as a trial occupies a slot in the household's available services. The slot is treated as occupied because the effort of vacating it exceeds the effort of the monthly charge.

Observation 6

A temporary service gains permanent budget status. Permanent budget status is not achieved through decision. It is achieved through the repeated absence of a decision. The renewal email skim is the mechanism by which that absence recurs on a monthly schedule.

Next observation: approximately 28 days.
