The packet was the same color. The logo was unchanged. The price was up forty pence from the last clear memory of buying it, which was sometime in autumn, before the price changes became frequent enough to track.

The weight on the front said 150g. The previous weight had been, in memory, more. This memory could not be verified at the point of purchase.

Shrinkflation suspicion is the condition of carrying a private reference database of product weights, quantities, and prices that may or may not be accurate but functions as legal tender in the internal economy of consumer grievance. The suspicion does not require proof. It requires only the feeling of reduced volume at a maintained or increased price, a feeling that is often correct and occasionally is not, and which has no official appeals process.

By February 2022, inflation had made the checkout routine into a site of ambient forensic activity. The prices that had been stable long enough to become background noise were now changing often enough to require active monitoring. People who had not previously tracked grocery prices began tracking them. People who had always tracked them began tracking more carefully. The ordinary consumer had become, through economic circumstance, an involuntary analyst.

What the field notes document is the particular texture of shrinkflation as a category of this experience. Standard inflation changes the price you pay. Shrinkflation changes the quantity you receive while leaving the price the same or raising it less visibly. It requires the consumer to notice the absence of something that was never formally promised. There is no advertised weight reduction. There is only the packet, slightly lighter, saying nothing about when it changed.

The suspicion is the rational response to this. It applies remembered specifications to current purchases. It functions as due diligence in a transaction where the other party changed the terms without announcement.

The packet was purchased. The suspicion was filed. Nothing was resolved. The next purchase will generate the same comparison. This is now how shopping works.
