Field Notes on Tab Saved for Later
The article has been open for three weeks. Every other tab has been opened and closed multiple times. This one has not been touched.
The tab was opened on the third of last month.
The headline was relevant to something being thought about at the time. The tab was not closed because closing it felt like losing the thought. The tab was not read because reading it required more attention than was available. The tab was saved as a middle position: not closed, not read, present as a reminder that the article exists and is waiting.
Observation 1: The Tab Hierarchy
Forty-two other tabs have been opened and closed in the period since the saved tab was opened. The saved tab has outlasted all of them. This is not because it is more important than the others. It is because the others had clear purposes that were fulfilled. The saved tab has a deferred purpose. Deferred purposes are harder to close than fulfilled ones.
The saved tab sits at the left end of the browser because it was opened three weeks ago and tabs accumulate from left to right. It is a stratigraphic record. The older the tab, the more to the left. The saved tab is the oldest tab in the browser.
Observation 2: The Deferral Pattern
The tab has been deferred on approximately fourteen occasions, each time because the current moment was not the right moment for a long read. The right moment for a long read requires: no pending tasks, sufficient time, adequate focus, and the specific interest in this particular subject that existed three weeks ago and may or may not still exist.
The conditions have not all been met simultaneously. Each individual condition has been met at different times, but not in combination.
Observation 3: The Half-Read Possibility
On one occasion, two weeks ago, the article was opened. It was read for approximately ninety seconds, covering the headline and the first two paragraphs. It was then closed because something came up. The tab was not closed because closing it after reading ninety seconds would feel like giving up at a stage that did not constitute reading it.
The tab remains open. The first two paragraphs have been read. The rest will be read later.
Later is still available. The tab is still open.
