Day 1, 9:47 a.m.
Subject sits down to begin a task. The task is straightforward. The materials are present. The task has been on the list since yesterday. At the moment the subject would logically begin, the subject instead identifies a prior condition that must be addressed before real work can start. The condition is new. It was not identified yesterday, when the task was added. It is identified now, when the task is due.
The prior condition takes twenty minutes to resolve. The task is not touched.
Day 4, 11:02 a.m.
A second prerequisite. The subject explains, to no one in particular, that this one is actually important. It is also new. The task waits.
Day 6, 2:15 p.m.
A workaround has been created. Specifically, someone adjacent to the subject has begun starting the task ten minutes before the subject is expected to begin, reasoning that the prerequisite period is predictable and can be absorbed if one simply begins earlier. The workaround functions. This is noticed.
Day 9, morning
The workaround has produced a second check designed to confirm the first one worked. Specifically, the adjacent party now asks, upon sitting down, whether the prerequisite has already been handled. The subject confirms. Both parties then begin. The prior confirmation step is not questioned because it appears to save time, which it does, which is the reason it will remain.
Day 14, mid-morning
The task now has a documented pre-phase. No one wrote the documentation. The documentation exists in practice. Three people know the sequence. One of them is new and learned it by watching. The task itself is identical to what it was two weeks ago. The administrative system surrounding it has added approximately fifteen minutes and one new participant.
Observation
Task prerequisite invention may continue indefinitely once everyone knows how to work around it. This is not a finding. This is a description of the current state. The current state is stable.
