Field Notice on Remote Work Gratitude

Once remote work gratitude prevents one awkward moment, it must remain in force for the rest of the routine.

Field Notice on Remote Work Gratitude Progress Report, October 2021

Summary

Someone publicly praises remote work while privately complaining about another day of calls at home. This report documents the current phase of the practice.

Phase One: The Post

A small inconvenience leads someone to adopt remote work gratitude for the next attempt. The attempt in this case is not the first post. The first post occurred in early 2020, when remote work was new and the gratitude was structurally genuine: this beats commuting by a margin that requires no elaboration.

The post was published. It received engagement. The engagement confirmed the tone as correct.

Phase Two: The Pattern

The next attempt works, so the behavior receives more credit than the circumstances. The circumstances changed substantially over twenty months. The commute is still not happening. The home is not a different size than it was. The calls require a quiet room and the quiet room is now the bedroom. Remote work gratitude has been posted four times since February 2020.

After enough repetitions, the group protects remote work gratitude from evidence that it is no longer useful. The evidence in this case is: the post was written during a week when the person had four hours of calls in three different rooms because no single room was free for the full day.

Phase Three: The Private Report

A private message thread contains a different account of the same period. The private account is specific: the third room was the bathroom, the calls ran long, the household had guests for Diwali, and the situation resolved only because one family member agreed to take the guest to a nearby park for forty minutes during the longest call.

This account was not posted. Remote work gratitude was.

The Governing Contradiction

The post aims to sound personal. The most personal moments arrive in the most familiar script. The familiar script is: flexibility, no commute, time with family, grateful. The most personal moment was the bathroom call. That moment is not in the script.

The Absurd Rule

Convenience becomes mandatory when returning to the ordinary method feels like extra work. The ordinary method here is not working remotely. It is honesty about working remotely. Returning to it would require explaining the bathroom, the guests, and the forty minutes in the park, which would produce a different kind of engagement and a different kind of question.

Remote work gratitude continues. Its governing terms have not been revised.

Current Status

The next scheduled post has not been drafted. The next scheduled visit to an office has not been confirmed. Both are expected before the end of the year.
