Final Episode Status Has Been Extended

The decision was made at 10:47pm.

One more episode, and then sleep. This was a reasonable decision, made by a reasonable person, with full knowledge of how long the episode was and how early the morning would be. The decision was correct. It was also the last decision made that evening.

The Terms

The final episode was final when it was agreed upon. The agreement applied to the episode currently playing. It did not, by its original terms, extend to the episode that followed. The episode that followed required a new decision. The new decision was affected by having just watched forty-two minutes of a show at a point in the narrative where something had happened.

A new decision, made under these conditions, was always going to extend the terms.

The Extension Mechanism

At 11:35pm, the episode ended. The next episode began without requiring a positive action. Autoplay had been left on, which means the user's earlier inaction had made a decision on their behalf, which they were now watching the consequences of.

The decision to stop had been made before the autoplay started. It was therefore technically still in effect. It was therefore being honored by watching to see what happened in the first few minutes before committing to the full episode.

The first few minutes committed them to the full episode. This was not a surprise.

The Classification

One more episode is a promise made by the awake self to the future tired self. The awake self has full agency. The future tired self, now present, is a different stakeholder with different information, specifically that the show is good and stopping is uncomfortable and the morning is abstract.

The final episode was final. The agreement did not survive the credits.
