The focus block has been labeled, explained, and then negotiated away for the third consecutive Tuesday.
The block is called Focus Time. It appears on the calendar in grey, which the calendar application uses to signal that this is not a meeting but something the user has placed there deliberately. It covers Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from two to five. It has been there since October.
On Tuesday it was moved for a cross-functional sync that could not accommodate any other slot. On Thursday it was kept, though a question was raised in Slack about whether an exception might be possible. A short explanation was provided. The exception was granted. This is the third week in a row the block has been fully or partially negotiated away.
The calendar focus defense was not invented in 2022. It became louder in 2022 because the return-to-office created a new scheduling pressure: now the meeting needed to happen on a day when the right people were physically present, which collapsed the flexible arrangement that remote work had briefly allowed. The focus block, which had been treated as somewhat real during the fully remote period, was now being tested against a different hierarchy of needs.
The limit counts as successful only if the person enforcing it can demonstrate continued goodwill toward everyone affected by it. This is the rule, though nobody wrote it down. Each accepted exception is evidence of goodwill. Each declined request requires more explanation to prove the goodwill is still there. The explanation becomes work. The work accumulates.
Someone in the meeting asked why the block was not simply moved. The block was not simply moved because moving it would require finding a new two-to-three-hour uninterrupted window, and the calendar no longer contained any such windows. The block occupied one of the last defensible positions. Surrendering it would mean accepting that focus time was a category that had been removed from the working week rather than a block that had been temporarily disrupted.
