FORENSIC ANALYSIS: WEEKEND WAKE GUILT

Subject: Spontaneous Guilt Response Upon Late Waking on a Non-Obligated Morning Status: Recurring, seasonal peak in spring Evidence: Internal monologue, reconstructed

Scene of Incident

Saturday, 9:47am. No alarm was set. This was deliberate. The week contained five days and several of them were long. Sleep was the scheduled activity.

The person woke.

The first thought was: "9:47."

Nature of the Guilt

Waking late is the stated purpose of the day. Waking late is also, apparently, a violation of something.

The second thought was a brief inventory of what could have been done in the time between a notional 7am and the actual 9:47am. This inventory produced a list of tasks none of which had been planned for this morning. They were generated specifically to contextualize the lateness.

The governing rule: weekend wake guilt may continue until trying to sleep becomes the more disruptive activity.

Evidence Chain

| Time | Event | |------|-------| | 9:47am | Woke | | 9:47am | Registered time | | 9:47am | Noted what could have been done since 7am | | 9:48am | Considered getting up immediately to recover the morning | | 9:49am | Remained in bed | | 9:50am | Considered that remaining in bed was the correct choice and was still guilty | | 9:51am | Began planning rest of day in sufficient detail to address the guilt |

Findings

The leisure was earned. The guilt arrived before the leisure could be used.

The planning that occurred between 9:47am and 10:04am produced a schedule more ambitious than any weekday contains. The schedule will be partially completed. The partial completion will be evaluated against the full schedule rather than against the original plan, which was: rest.

A weekend wake guilt cycle eventually turns a free morning into a performance of free morning management.

Eventually the attempt to optimize sleep becomes the main reason sleep starts late.

Conclusion

The person got up at 10:04am. Made coffee. The coffee was good.

This fact is not included in the guilt inventory because the inventory was closed at 10:04am.
